Automatic Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) have seen a huge growth across multiple industries. The presence of aisles and multiple access points may however present many hazards to personnel if access is not controlled and risk appropriately reduced.
Fortress devices are commonly used in risk reduction for automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS) by some of the largest companies in the world.
While machines used for ASRS are increasingly common in modern warehouses, they can still present many hazards to personnel if access is not controlled and risk appropriately reduced.
Why choose Fortress for ASRS safety?
- Reduced incidents and downtime: The implementation of robust risk reduction measures can lead to a significant reduction in workplace incidents and downtime.
- Tailored to your specific needs: Configurable safety solutions can be designed to meet the unique requirements and challenges of a particular industry, or application.
- Prevent Unexpected Start-Up: Where there is whole body access, proactive inhibit functions such as an extracted personnel key can ensure the area cannot be accessed until a key has first been removed, and then taken in by personnel to prevent unexpected start-up.
- Multi-gate access control: Some machines in automated warehouses require an access point on every single aisle, Fortress can support with solutions to allow operators to safely enter the safeguarded space without incurring high installation costs.
- Network Connectivity: Network communication is made possible with proNet, the module developed by Fortress that allows amGardpro to communicate with the main industrial network protocols: EtherNet/IP, PROFINET and EtherCAT.
- EN 528* compliance: Fortress devices can be used to comply with EN 528 with solutions that prevent: the risk of being trapped during whole body access, machine movement whilst the door is open, unauthorised access, as well as provide escape release functionality.
EN 528* compliant solutions from Fortress
EN 528 contains requirements for restricting access to authorized personnel and for mode selection as part of reducing risk in Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems. Fortress devices may be used as part of a wider system to meet the requirements of EN 528.
- Authorized personnel operate a mode selection switch, releasing a key when in manual mode.
- Key is taken and used at the interlock for access to the aisle. The key is removed and taken inside the safeguarded space. The interlock is also equipped with an escape release.
- Key can be used at a control station inside the aisle for selection of manual mode by authorized personnel.
*EN 528 is a regional standard with specific requirements that are only applicable to Europe. However, the principles of restricting access and preventing unexpected start-up can be relevant for different ASRS applications worldwide.
